Transcript: Hearings on the Nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court – July 16th, Part II

Transcript of Sotomayors Confirmation Hearings - July 14th 2009 Throughout the Sotomayor’s hearings Republicans have accused the Democratic members of entering the proceeding with their voting ballots already filled out. One quote by Senator Leahy may have best illustratedthis complaint: “The president told the American people in his Internet address back in May as a justice of the Supreme Court, you would, quote, “bring not only the experience acquired over the course of a brilliant legal career, but the wisdom accumulated over the course of an extraordinary journey, a journey defined by hard work, fierce intelligence and enduring faith in America. All things are possible.”

We bore witness of that this week. Experience and wisdom will benefit all Americans. And when you walk under that piece of Vermont marble over the door of the Supreme Court, speaking of equal justice under law, I know that will guide you. Judge Sotomayor, thank you. Godspeed.”

Transcript: Hearings on the Nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court – July 16th, Part IV

Transcript of Sotomayors Confirmation Hearings - July 14th 2009 As the hearings continued, one issue which raised concerns amoung Republicans is what one critic has described as Judge Sotomayor’s “…history of judging without explaining why on issues she was most likely aware may come back to haunt her.”

Former NRA President, Sandy Froman, described it to the Senate Committee (concerning one case in particular) as “It’s kind of like when I was in math class it wasn’t enough to get the right answer. You had to show your work so the professor knew that you actually worked the problem and you didn’t cheat. So you know without any explanation of how she reached her conclusion we can’t tell whether that was a legitimate application of the Constitution and the statute…”

Transcript of Sotomayors Confirmation Hearings - July 14th 2009 As Sotomayor’s nomination hearings continue, Senator Kaufman attempted to reduce the damaging affect of Sotomayor’s “wise Latina” comments. Citing a number of occasions she had publicly made the same comment without criticism, the Senator pointed out that the Judge has previously made the same comment during her Circuit Court Confirmation Hearings without a single negative comment from any of the Senators who participated.
