The Federal Trade Commission proposal report to Reinvent Journalism is more than an eye opener. It challenges the freedom of press given to us by the First Amendment.

To begin with, this takeover is hidden behind the “noble idea” of stepping-up to save print journalism through subsidization by the government. It is well known that since 2000 electronic media has overtaken print media as the way that people receive their news. Print journalism has declined in advertising revenue by about 45% since 2000.

But, in this FTC report, government would be involved in the broadcasting of news possibly by overseeing, taxing, directing, and selecting some medias and journalists. In my opinion, all of this steps on the First Amendment which gives us freedom of the press, freedom of all the press. They would select which medias, stories and journalist are worthy of support.

Some of the suggested methods even went to the extent of taxing the public to subsidize some journalists. Liz Trotta finds this quite similar to that what was included in a book written by two left wing authors. George Soros funded one of those authors, by the way.

Taxing news media organizations would be based on their “socially beneficially purpose”. In other words, if the far left group likes what the organization reports, then they get a tax credit if not then they are taxed.

And the government would add a tax on anything electronic that is sold such as a 5% tax on consumer electronics and a 3% on ISP-cell phone tax.

The report goes further, suggesting setting up what it calls the News AmeriCorps, where young journalist are selected by nonprofit groups for journalistic pieces. Also included would be Citizenship News Vouchers. Of course, public broadcasting is not forgotten. More monies would be incorporated for it. To top it off, there would be government grants for investigative journalistic pieces by university students. Together, it might cost as high as $35 billion annually.

Then there would be a national fund for local reporting. It’s hard to believe that they were so bold as to suggest control of our local news as well.

Even more troubling is that the FTC is trying to differentiate what they call “Proprietary Facts” from facts already in the public domain. Jeff Jarvis mentioned that you could liken “Proprietary Facts” to “ownership of a fact”, in other words “fact patenting”. I can’t help but wonder would this mean that if you owned a fact and wanted it to remain secret, no one could know about it. With this, would there be any freedom of the press?

Gregg Jarrett stated that some of the types of things in the report smacks of the Communist Manifesto written by Ingles and Karl Marx. That is eliminating the media and have all information disseminated by the government.

Thank goodness this report received such a bad reaction that the FTC had to issue another statement explaining that this is only a draft, not final recommendations and these are only suggestions for discussion. On the other hand, you have to take in consideration that this FTC report project is one year in the making with the draft just being released.

Isn’t it interesting that the report has no author, only that it is a draft composed by the FTC staff.

Pennsylvania’s governor Ed Rendell (D) recently approved a hardline ‘Big Brother’ style advertisment to convince people and businesses to pay their back taxes. Does this big brother approach work? Nine days after the launch of the campaign, the governor states Pennsylvania has recovered approximately $22 million. So apparently yes. But is that the real question?

While most agree it is far better to enforce existing tax laws and convince those who owe to pay then to raise taxes on all, many question the approach. Some are asking – Does balancing the state budget justify Big Brother ads?”

Section 9006 requires businesses to report every expenditure (between businesses) that totals or is greater than $600. This means if your company sends you on a single flight from the East Coast to the West Coast and airline ticket alone cost $600, that expense must be reported to the IRS via a 1099 form. Likewise, if your company holds a once a month birthday party for staff (purchasing all items from the same store each time), and the total expense for the year meets or exceeds $600 ($50+ a month), it must be reported via a 1099 form.

Why was this obviously tedious new reporting policy inserted? According to an unnamed Democratic aide, this “Voluntary (additional) information reporting improves tax compliance without raising taxes on small businesses…” Translated into English – Businesses will be forced to pay more in taxes without the negative press of officially raising taxes.

That said, while no one supports tax evasion, what critics warn will be even more detrimental to the economy than higher taxes for small businesses (due to this new change)… all those 1099 forms. Extra paperwork has the tendency to force businesses to consolidate their purchases to a smaller group of providers, usually larger providers that are willing to absorb the cost of that extra paperwork. For the smaller company that focuses on a niche market (for instance toner cartridges for printers), simply having the lowest price and good customer service will no longer be enough. Current customers will naturally begin looking for larger suppliers who can provide additional items (paper, printers, pens, pencils, desks, tables, lamps, chairs, dry erase boards, etc.) as consolidating their purchases will reduce the amount of paperwork required to be filed with the IRS – this even though the actual price per item maybe higher and the related support worse. The end result, Section 9006 favors Big Corporations over Small Business and Small Businesses are likely to pay the price. This despite the fact that a majority of the jobs in the United States have tended to come from Small Businesses.

As the media stopped focusing on TARP, so did most Americans. As with many hot topics and government expenditures, TARP was forgotten and swept under the virtual rug by most politicians and tax payers alike. That is until GM’s recent announcement that it had paid a portion of its debt back to the Federal Government early. That announcement, much to the shagrin of the Obama Administration, has moved TARP back in to the line light and resulted in more than one American asking… ‘So how much are we, the American tax payer, going to have to pay for this?’

The plain and simple answer of course is… It depends how much you earn.

Under the watchful eye of the media, thousands of Americans peacefully participated in non-partisan Tea Party Rallies across the country yesterday. Protesters expressed their frustration over record breaking Federal spending, borrowing, bailouts, higher taxes, the take-over of Health Care, and the encroachment on American freedom.

Interviewing several participants at one rally, the overriding message was the same “…The era of Big Government is over & we don’t want it back!” Protestors highlighted recent and pending tax hikes not just on the ‘Rich’ but on the middle class. Some came prepared with documentation listing hundreds of pork barrel projects in the Stimulus Package and Federal Budget. One Tea Party participant told us “…This is my second year at a ‘Tax Day Rally’ and I am even more dedicated to the cause than I was a year ago…The Congress and the President are ignoring the will of the American public, they are ignoring history and they are endangering not only their own political future but the future of our children… President Kennedy in the 1960’s and Ronald Reagan in the 1980’s both proved cutting taxes is the solution for economic woes, not raising them and spending beyond our means.“

As expected, rumors of anti-Tea Party infiltrators attempting to distract the media with demonstrations of racism or worse was a hot topic amongst protesters. However when asked, we found only one person who stated she had witness anything. She told us that, at a rally earlier in the day, a few college aged “kids” yelled racist comments at a small group of African Americans ladies passing by. At first she was shocked to hear the comments, particularly considering the mix of ethnicity’s at the rally, however before she could turn around several of her fellow Tea Partiers were “escorting” the kids out of the group and asked them not to return. At the same time at least two Tea Partiers ran out to apologize to the women. “I don’t know if the reaction was planned just in case or if everyone just acted, but it was swift.” When asked for the reaction of the ladies who were the target of the comments, she stated that “…they declined our offer to join the rally…” but appeared to accept the apology “…and one even gave us a thumbs up… ”

Overall, based our observations and interviews, the Tea Partiers we met yesterday were honest hard working Americans who have something to say. Something they want Congress and the President to hear… “Listen to the people or listen to our vote. Big government is NOT the will of the people…”
