Reaction from the international community has largely been critical of the Iranian government, one of the few exceptions has been Russia. With a significant history of political and economic ties with Iran, it has been in the interest of the Russian government to not only avoid criticizing the Iranian government but in fact use its position as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council to block or at least weaken any sanctions imposed against Iran.

After the Iranian Presidential Elections, Ahmadinejad attended a conference in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg and was photographed shaking hands with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Sergei Ryabkov, the Russian Deputy Feriegn Minister reportedly describe the demonstrations and controversy over potential voting irregularities as an Iranian domestic mater. On June 19th, the Russian Foreign Minister stated that it ‘respects’ the current Presidential Election results and believes that any disputes related to the voting process should be “…settled in strict compliance with Iran’s Constitution and law.”

Note: Russia is currently assisting the Iranian government to build a nuclear plant.
